Natural Habitat Adventures offers eco-savvy trips to prime polar bear country.

Boulder, Colorado – October 2009 – "Don't feed the bears" may be adventure travel rule number one, but Natural Habitat Adventures founder/director Ben Bressler admits a polar bear once tried to snitch his egg salad sandwich on one of his company's up-close-and-personal polar bear expeditions to northern Manitoba’s Hudson Bay area. Luckily iron bars on the "tundra buggies" in which guests travel keep curious bears from actually sharing lunch.
The popular snowbound safaris include the chance to see some 50 – 100 polar bears a day, including play-fighting young males and mothers with cubs, as well as arctic fox, caribou, the northern lights, and more. Polar bear expeditions are offered from October through November, and rates start at $4,595 per person, double occupancy, for the six-day Classic Polar Bears. The Tundra Lodge Adventure includes accommodations on a “rolling hotel” parked in the heart of the polar bear habitat. Group size is limited, and all trips arrive and depart from Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Bressler notes that it’s natural to want to visit the climate-threatened polar bears while we still can, “but it’s crucial that travelers ensure their visits don’t further endanger fragile habitats.” Founded in 1985, Natural Habitat Adventures is the first carbon neutral tour company in the U.S., and gives back to the communities it visits through economic initiatives, education, and sustainable practices – and all its Winnipeg transfers are handled via a recycled biofuel "veggie van."
A member of Adventure Collection and exclusive Conservation Travel Provider to World Wildlife Fund, the company provides once-in-a-lifetime small-group encounters with wildlife in more than 30 countries. Natural Habitat Adventures has been featured by such media as USA Today and Travel + Leisure, was ranked top tour operator on Conde Nast Traveler’s 2006 Green List, and received '08 Best New Trip honors from National Geographic Adventure.
